Getting it right

What to settle before you buy

Solar equipment fails far more often from being specified wrong than from being built badly. These are the questions worth answering first — whoever you end up buying from.

Gate weight and swing

Leaf weight, length and whether it swings or slides determine the operator. A gate that binds in its own arc will kill any opener regardless of how it is powered.

Cycles per day

A gate opened twice a day and one opened forty times are different systems. Count honestly, including deliveries.

Cold-weather duty

Battery capacity drops in the cold on exactly the days a gate is heaviest to move through snow and ice. Both effects have to be in the sizing.

How it gets opened

Remotes, keypad, phone app, intercom or a loop sensor — and how it behaves in a power failure. This is worth settling before anything is mounted.
