Getting it right

What to settle before you buy

Solar equipment fails far more often from being specified wrong than from being built badly. These are the questions worth answering first — whoever you end up buying from.

Head and distance, then flow

How high the water has to lift and how far it has to travel set the system before the flow rate does. Getting these measured properly is most of a correct specification.

Storage beats batteries

For most agricultural uses it is cheaper and far more robust to pump into a tank while the sun is up than to store electricity and pump at night. Size the tank, not the battery bank.

Freeze protection

A system anywhere in Canada has to be either drained for winter or built to survive it. Which of those you want changes the whole design, so it is a first conversation rather than a last one.

Water source and filtration

Dugout, well and cistern water each carry different sediment. Pump wear is usually a filtration decision made months earlier.
